A: Both Pearson eCollege and it's learning provide all the upgrades to all clients at the same time. This is possible with an ASP because they are only working on one instance of the software rather than sending out patches, fixes or enhancements to every client. Running a single instance of the application enables them to be distributed with minimum effort, with the highest level of confidence in the success of the upgrade (because the target environment is extremely well known and predictable) and in a very timely manner.
Rather than having to manage different version upgrades in a traditional self-hosted model, or performing repeated upgrades on a range of different systems in a hosting model, in a single instance model, all that is required is a single push of code into production that immediately becomes available to all client institutions.
Running a single instance also allows upgrades to be distributed on a predictable maintenance cycle, thus avoiding the need for frequent and numerous hot-fixes or patches, which are typically required in hosted or self-hosting environments. Predictable maintenance cycles allow all upgrades to be fully tested before deployment and greatly reduce the risk of introducing unintended bugs into the system when patches are applied.
